underwater scubadillo poker run @ Wheeler Branch Reservoir Park

Join us Saturday, September 14th, as we celebrate our annual Scubadillo Poker Run, where dive-buddy contestants compete for the best five-card poker hand from our underwater “playing table.”

WHERE
Wheeler Branch Reservoir in Glen Rose. Take I-35 south of Dallas, then Hwy. 67 to Glen Rose. In Glen Rose, turn right on Bo Gibbs Boulevard for one mile, then turn right/north on CR 301. In ½ mile, veer to your left when you see a “Y” and a small brick wall welcoming you to the park/reservoir. We’ll post a Dillo sign there, too. NOTE: This turn onto CR 326 can be easy to miss. Follow the road for ½ mile to the park entrance. Once inside, look for our bright yellow banners. We’ll be near the water, not in the big pavilion.

PARK FEE & RULES
Park entrance fee is $10 per person. Cash only. Please have exact amount, as they’d rather not deal with giving change, etc. Overnight camping is not allowed. Nice restrooms are on site. Pets are allowed in the park but must be kept on a short leash.

FOOD
We’ll fire up the grill around noon with plenty of yummy burgers and “fixins” plus a mound of healthy grilled veggies. We appreciate everyone bringing some type of side dish to share (savory OR sweet). Bottled water provided. The feast is FREE to active members, and $10 for non-members. (PS: you can become a member on the spot; there are several more activities between now and the end of 2022. 😉

POKER TIME
The “playing field” will be laid out at 12’-15’ (the water is low this year) with two decks – a red and a blue – of special plastic-coated cards. Each card is attached with a binder clip to a zig-zaged line. Each two-buddy team will be allowed to collect a maximum of five cards at one time. You’ll have an hour to improve your hand as you take and replace cards to create the winning standard poker hands (flushes, straights, four-of-a-kind, full houses, etc.). Prizes will be awarded to the top poker hands. And don’t worry if you’re by yourself; we’ll buddy you up if you don’t already have one.

WHAT TO BRING
– Folding chair
– Sunglasses, sunblock, hats, etc.
– Beverage of choice other than water (be Discreet if you have adult bevs)
– Side dish to share during lunch
– Wagon to haul gear from parking lot (optional, but just know it’s a bit of a walk)
– Swimsuits and dive gear, towels. BTW, if you don’t want to dive, that’s fine. Join us for the fun AND to swim in the “cool” water if you want.

WATER TEMP, etc.
For your visual enjoyment, if you want to continue diving after the poker run, you’ll find two helicopters, a bus, a dive platform and fire hydrant. Water temp is 80+ degrees, and in previous years, there was a hard thermocline after 35’. With the HOT weather this summer, you may or may not hit the thermocline. A skin or 1-3 mil wetsuit should be ample coverage, especially when you spend an hour in shallow water during the poker game.

TIMING (a p p r o x i m a t e)
Arrive 11 – 11:30 a.m. Lunch around 12:30. Poker Run after lunch, 1:30 ish. Prizes awarded at 4. We’ll wrap up by 5 p.m. Some of you might want to stay longer to dive more – and that’s completely up to you. If you’ve got the air, use it! 😉
