Rebel’s/ Dillo’s Wine and Cheese Party and Arctic Dive
Details
FEBRUARY 2022 OUTING – WINE & CHEESE PARTY AND ARCTIC DIVE The Wine & Cheese Party /Arctic Dive on February 26 and 27 is an annual multi-club event that has traditionally been organized and supported primarily by the Diving Rebel and the Scubadillo dive clubs, with occasional other dive club participation.
Last year, due to ongoing construction work at the Marietta Landing campground in Lake Murray State Park, our traditional location for this outing, we moved our event to the Inland Diver’s Association property along the shore of Possum Kingdom Lake. As a result of Jim and Linda’s visual inspection (thanks much) of the “improvements” at the Marietta Landing campground, we are again moving our event, although this time to a location just up the park road from Marietta Landing.
The 2022 version, and most likely the location going forward, will be at the Buzzard’s Roost Campground, northwest of Marietta Landing and a lot closer to the park entrance. When driving on the park road to Marietta Landing, one passes the entrance to Buzzards’ Roost. At the end of this article, there is a map of a portion of Lake Murray State Park noting the location of the park office as well as Buzzard’s Roost campground.
For the event, we will be occupying Campsites 25, 28 and 29, encircled on a second map. As this is a new location and we do not have a working knowledge of the logistics of this site, we may not have a silent auction. A definitive statement will be forthcoming in a couple of days, as in the past, this has been a source of revenue for both clubs.
Jim mentioned that his experience is that the diving near Buzzards Roost is a bit superior to that near Marietta Landing. So you hardy souls that traditionally dive Lake Murray at this time of year, have at it. Diving will be on an ad hoc basis as there is not an organized dive time.
We will have our famous and traditional wine and cheese contest where we utilize a panel of just slightly less than sommelier-quality judges (if you don’t have an entry, you can be a judge) who will rate and award prizes for best red wine, best white wine, worst wine and best cheese.
The judging will begin about 4 PM. Please bring your bottles uncorked to the judging site and place them in the provided labeled paper bags to maintain the “secrecy” of the process.
Following the wine and cheese judging, the Diving Rebels will be providing a wonderful meal of brisket, turkey and beans. We are asking that you bring a favorite side item of either a salad or desert and your own drink.
After the meal, we will have our traditional raffle featuring all kinds of wonderful items. We ask if you have dive related items that could be used by anyone, that you consider donating these for this activity and allow someone else to experience the joy in the use of this items that you formerly experienced. For those of you who will be bidding, please bring cash.
On a personal note, it doesn’t look like my annual transport of a trailer load of wood for our traditional bonfire will happen this year as there is a burn ban at the park. I just confirmed this with a call to the park office.
Tent camping and RV trailer camping is available at Buzzards Roost. Go to https://guestrez.megasyshms.com/8Q8S8/lake-murray-state-park-campground/SearchCriteria/ to see what is available. There may also be accommodations at the park lodge as well as cabins.
Traditionally, for those spending the night at the park, we meet for breakfast at the beautifully refurbished lodge as the dining area provides an impressive overlooks of the lake. Additional details will be forthcoming at the event.
Tickets for the event are $10 in advance and $15 the day of the event. If you would like to attend and have not yet obtained your ticket, you can contact me and I will reserve and mark a $10 ticket for you on assurance of surety of your first born that you will attend.
If have made a reservation to spend the night in a tent, RV, cabin or lodge, you will be provided a day ticket for entrance to the park. If you are a day attendee, please stop at the park headquarters and purchase a pass for $10/vehicle. So you might car pool, if not spending the night. If anyone has any questions or needs to reserve a ticket, please contact me as noted below. Thanks and we look forward to seeing you next Saturday.
