MUST DIVE TENKILLER TRIP
June 25, 2016 @ 11:00 am
The Scubadillo Dive Club road show heads north near the end of June (weekend of 25/26) to Lake Tenkiller State Park in central Oklahoma for some shore and boat diving. We will be rallying around Noon Saturday at the parks scuba area (aptly named Scuba Park) at the tip of a peninsula near the Pine Cove Marina area. Throughout the afternoon we will be making shore dives from the scuba park area to see sunken objects like a helicopter, airplane, bus and numerous boats at various depths. You can even go deep (past 100 feet) off a wall!
On Sunday morning, you will have the choice of continuing diving off the shore or do a pair of boat dives around the lakes islands off the Calypso dive boat. The cost per diver (or passenger) is only $25 for the two boat dives that morning. There is a maximum limit of 16 passengers on the boat, so please contact David Prichard at [masked] as soon as possible to reserve your seat on the boat. After the morning dives, everyone is free to head back to Dallas or explore the lake area some more.
How to get there:
Tenkiller State Park is approximately a four-hour drive up Hwy. 75 (highway number changes to 69 in Oklahoma) and then head east on I-40 until you get to Vian where you head north on Hwy. 82. You will take a left on Hwy. 100/Blackgum Road that goes into the park. Once in the park, take E. 979 Road right to the scuba park (also called Fishermans Point). There is a $5 per vehicle day-use fee to get into the scuba area.
Where to stay:
Several of the Scubadillos have quickly made reservations at the State Park facilities, which include cabins and cottages, as well as camping. The park has 39 cabins (ranging from 1-3 bedrooms), a courtyard cottage building (like 10 motel rooms), plus numerous tent and RV campsites. You can call the Park office to make a reservation by dialing (918)[masked]. To search online for RV campsites, go to: https://www.gocampok.com/campground/app/reservation/search_available_campsites.php and for park information go to: http://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.7706.
There is also a nearby Corps of Engineers park called Strayhorn Landing Campground on the lake to the east of the State Park and the contact number there is (918)[masked]. Nearby resorts on the lake include Fin & Feather Resort (www.finandfeatherresort.com or call[masked]) or the Blue Doors resort (www.bluedoorsattenkiller.com/reservations or call[masked]).
Dive Shop & Boat:
Genes Aqua Pro is a full-service dive shop located on Hwy. 10A (address is 96638 Hwy. 10A in Gore, OK and phone number is[masked]) near Strayhorn Landing. The shop is open 8-6 on Saturday and 8-4 on Sunday, so tank rentals, air fills and gear rental are available during the weekend. Those going on the boat dives Sunday morning will meet at the dive shop to fill out a liability release and get air fills or needed gear. We will then go down to the marina and board the Calypso dive boat.
There is a restaurant at the State Parks marina and numerous restaurants just outside of the park, including Bid Daddys burger/steak place or Soda Steves gourmet burger restaurant at the Fin & Feather Resort. We will be getting together for a group dinner Saturday night after a day of diving.
Warning this is a popular summer destination so the park lodgings, campgrounds and nearby resorts fill up quickly. It would be wise now to make your reservation and secure a place to stay if you are considering joining us for this fun diving trip. We hope you can share in the adventure!
At this time of posting there are 3 or 4 motel type rooms available at the state park. Call Patsy at[masked].
