ANNUAL SCUBADILLO DIVE CLUB U/W PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST
October 10, 2015 @ 11:30 am
The ANNUAL SCUBADILLO DIVE CLUB U/W PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST
The date is Saturday, October 10th.
The place is Tyler State Park (TPS).
Get ready to come out for some fun this Saturday at Tyler State Park for the annual Scubadillo Dive Club’s Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest and Octoberfest feast. We will start the festivities off at the Lakeview Campground area – just look for the Scubadillo banners and signs. We will be out there starting Friday afternoon, so come on out anytime Saturday (or late Friday) to socialize before we start our dive to create our jack o’ lanterns at 2 PM at the park’s beach area.
There will be a lot of great prizes for the participants in the pumpkin carving contest, who will begin prepping their pumpkins around 1 PM. Each buddy team will have one pumpkin that needs to be cleaned out prior to entering the water, but you can’t pre-mark your design on the pumpkin prior to entering in the water (no stenciling above the water). Even hollowed out, the pumpkin will still be buoyant so a few pounds of weight will help keep it stable underwater.
Buddy teams will then “freestyle” their jack o’ lantern design in shallow water at the beach using dive knives or other pumpkin-carving tools. After one hour, the buddy teams will surface with their finished jack o’ lantern to be judge later in the evening when it gets dark. The pumpkins will be judged this year on how they look at night lit up by a single-wick wax candle (traditional jack o’ lantern) with no accessories or other light sources (strobes, light sticks, etc.).
After the diving activities have concluded then we will go back to the Lakeview “Scubadillo Central” campsite where we will feast on authentic German food for our Octoberfest dinner prepared by Henry and Judy. Please feel free to contribute any side dishes that you would like to share. BYOB and your own folding chair.
After the feast, we will begin judging the jack o’ lanterns as it gets dark enough to view the lit design. Prizes will then be awarded to the participants and include a regulator, wetsuit, fins and many other dive items.
Tyler State Park is only 90 miles east of Dallas off of Interstate 20, so you can easily make the event a day trip or plan to stay overnight camping (check availability with the park reservation system or pre-arrange to share a campsite with a Scubadillo with already a reservation) or one of the area hotels near Tyler. There is a park entry fee of $5 per adult (13+) while kids get in free.
The day’s activities are free for paid members of the Scubadillo Dive Club and $10 per person for non-members. Instead of paying the non-member participation fee, why not go to our new website and take advantage of our “last quarter” membership special of only $10 for individuals or $20 for family and be covered for the rest of the year’s Scubadillo events – including our Christmas Party on December 12th which also has the same non-member charge.
We need to get a headcount of everyone coming out to Tyler State Park this Saturday for our annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest and Octoberfest dinner. Please email David at [masked] by noon Thursday and let him know if you are: Participating in Octoberfest feast and how many are with you (authentic German fare by Chef Henry)Competing in the Underwater Pumpkin Carving contest (lots of great prizes)Camping at Tyler State Park and where (activities at Lakeview Campground)
We need to make sure we have enough food and prizes available for everyone. The day’s events are free for Scubadillo members and only $10 for non-members (hint: special Last Quarter special on memberships for same on our website). We will need a headcount as to :
